The Leadership team would like to thank you for your support of OrCAN. During this past year of restructuring, we have been working arduously to make OrCAN a non-profit organization. We are pleased to report that in the coming months, OrCAN will be an official non-profit. Having a 501(c)3 status will allow us to build an organization that we believe will represent the needs of our constituents. As we emerge from our year of restructuring, we believe you will be excited about our vision and our goals to increase college access to all Oregonians.

Please be on the lookout for future communications about our new membership drive, as well as about the resources and support we hope to provide you in the very near future.

The network consists of a team of professionals throughout the state with specific education, training, experience, and knowledge in providing greater opportunities for Oregonians. We are program managers, scholarship administrators, financial aid professionals, youth mentors, workforce retraining specialists, and many others. We work for the common good of Oregon and its citizens to build college programs in the state. The network provides professionals the resources they need, in the area of the state in which they live, to aid individuals in the successful transition from high school, unemployment, or the workforce, into higher education. Join the network. Make valuable connections. Discover emerging promising-practices. Offer your experience. Improve your skill-set. Develop a better service.

After two years of being incubated by the Oregon Student Assistance Commission, and being funded by the Educational Credit Management Corporation, OrCAN is now moving to its next step. This past spring, an new leadership team was elected and we are actively working to create a non-profit organization. This structure will allow us to effectively partner with a number of organizations and agencies who want to make college access a priority in Oregon.

On behalf of OrCAN, I want to thank the Oregon Student Assistance Commission and the Educational Credit Management Corporation for having a larger vision for Oregonians and a belief in the OrCAN organization.

I want to thank you for your continued support. The OrCAN Leadership group looks forward to bringing you new resources and events this year.

The Oregon College Access Network hosted its 1st Annual Conference: Bridging the College Access Gap, at Lane Community College on October 27th. Co-sponsored by the Educational Credit Management Corporation, Oregon Student Assistance Commission, Oregon University System, Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development, Oregon Independent College Association, and Lane Community College, the conference brought together access providers, education administrators, and policy makers from across the state to network and lay the groundwork for the organization into the future.

The morning address, by Portland State University Student Body President Hannah Fisher, reminded participants of the reason behind the work they do. With learning disabilities, Hannah faced numerous challenges in childhood and pursuit of education. College access professionals, however, provided Hannah the help she needed to attend college and find success.

Dalton Miller-Jones, Chair of the Student Participation and Completion Subcommittee of the State Board of Higher Education, spoke of the subcommittee’s results from statewide community forums on college access and success. Dalton highlighted the subcommittee’s report “Breaking Barriers: Oregon community forums on college access and success.”

Keynote speaker, MoraLee Holzapfel, offered her experience with the Ohio College Access Network and demonstrated the possibilities in store for OrCAN.
